Welcome 2 My Dark Side

November 30th, 2009

monstrumologistI really hate when I have to do reviews like this… well, I must not hate it too much or the fact would remain that I wouldn’t, however here we are… the dreaded dislike.

I was relatively excited about this book! Monsters and the men who study them…what more could a freak of nature like me ask for? Not a hell of a lot…right? Wrong… Even though they are sometimes hard to find, and even harder to describe,  I do actually have standards. “Monstrumologist” didn’t live up to any of them.

The synopsis sounded exciting… if I remember it correctly it spouted something like “shocks frequent and shrouded in a splattery miasma of blood, bone, pus, and maggots,” what I got however was a drug out description of a mentally unstable “Monster Dr.” and his too young ward that was as equally dull as his mentor.

How drug out was it exactly?? Hum.. I guess I would equate it to the duration of a double root canal, performed in a third world country, while using Orajel as an anesthetic.  IT WAS RIDICULOUS!!!  As a matter of fact, a book that should have taken me all of a day to read has yet to be completed…after 2 weeks of forcing myself to get interested I finally just gave up.  50% was all I could muster and even that was pushing it.

I almost feel sorry for “Rick Yancy,” his previous books where actually enjoyable, but after reading this slop I seriously doubt I will venture into any of his make believe worlds again.

The only positive I can give is a big ‘ol “WaaHoo” that I didn’t actually shell out dough for this stinker, even though in the end I did fell like I paid for it…in headaches and heavy sighs.

Save your money peeps…buy a dictionary…it’s much more interesting.

Kindle 2 update adds battery life, native PDF reader

By Tim Conneally | Published November 24, 2009, 1:42 PM

Today, Amazon announced that an automatic update to its popular Kindle 2 e-reader will extend the device’s battery life by 85% and add a native PDF reader to its repertoire of functions.

The Kindle 2 could previously stay on for four days with wireless connectivity activated, following the firmware update, Amazon says the device will be able to stay turned on for a whole week.

Formerly, PDF documents had to be converted to Kindle format to be viewable on the family of e-readers. Now, users can e-mail PDF documents or upload them to their Kindle through a USB connection and be able to read them without conversion.

It’s a small, but significant upgrade as e-readers are looking like some of the most desirable gadgets this holiday season and the competition to Amazon’s Kindle 2 is stronger than it’s ever been.

Its Blue Skyes Ahead!

November 22nd, 2009

I am dragging a little bit on my book this week, and I apologize, but to keep your minds working I figured I would share with you a movie that I happened to stumble upon at 2 in the morning.  Not sure exactly what it is that I love so much about it, (I think maybe it’s the “I can’t say this” scene) but I will admit that I have watched it 3 times now.  Hope you enjoy it too….or better yet, I hope you can find it! It’s pretty abstract.

Beautiful Creatures

Product Description

There were no surprises in Gatlin County.

We were pretty much the epicenter of the middle of nowhere.

At least, that’s what I thought.

Turns out, I couldn’t have been more wrong.

There was a curse.

There was a girl.

And in the end, there was a grave.

Lena Duchannes is unlike anyone the small Southern town of Gatlin has ever seen, and she’s struggling to conceal her power and a curse that has haunted her family for generations. But even within the overgrown gardens, murky swamps and crumbling graveyards of the forgotten South, a secret cannot stay hidden forever.Ethan Wate, who has been counting the months until he can escape from Gatlin, is haunted by dreams of a beautiful girl he has never met. When Lena moves into the town’s oldest and most infamous plantation, Ethan is inexplicably drawn to her and determined to uncover the connection between them.

In a town with no surprises, one secret could change everything.

Amazon.com Review

Ethan Wate is struggling to hide his apathy for his high school “in” crowd in small town Gatlin, South Carolina, until he meets the determinedly “out” Lena Duchannes, the girl of his dreams (literally–she has been in his nightmares for months). What follows is a smart, modern fantasy–a tale of star-crossed lovers and a dark, dangerous secret. Beautiful Creatures is a delicious southern Gothic that charms you from the first page, drawing you into a dark world of magic and mystery until you emerge gasping and blinking, wondering what happened to the last few hours (and how many more you’re willing to give up). To tell too much of the plot would spoil the thrill of discovery, and believe me, you will want to uncover the secrets of this richly imagined dark fantasy on your own. –Daphne Durham

Thats What She Said!

November 17th, 2009

In honor of “New Moon’s” theatrical release on Friday I thought it was only fitting to throw my 2 cents into the “Twilight” pot. “New Moon” was, of course, my favorite book in the series, even though I found myself throwing the book at my bedroom wall SEVERAL times. (Literally… my husband thought I was loosing my mind.) I hope you enjoy these, and better yet, I hope you share a few of YOUR favorite quotes with me!nm_covers_german

P.S. The pictures you see are various International covers for “New Moon.” Brilliant aren’t they.

New Moon – Stephenie Meyer

“You want a nice stereo? Drive your own car.” Bella Swan

“… never, in the nearly four hundred years now since I was born, have I ever seen anything to make me doubt whether God exists in some form or the other. Not even the reflection in the mirror.” Carlisle Cullen

“Bella, you gave yourself a paper cut- that hardly deserves the death penalty.” Edward Cullen

“Of course, I’ll always love you … in a way. But what happened the other night made me realize that it’s time for a change. Because I’m … tired of pretending to be something I’m not, Bella. I’m not human.” Edward Cullen

“Here’s to responsibility. Twice a week.” Jacob Black

“Why are you apologizing for bleeding?” Jacob Blacknm_covers_uk1

“As long as you like me best. And you think I’m good-looking – sort of. I’m prepared to be annoyingly persistent.” Jacob Black

“I saw that – I can see in your eyes what it does to you when I say their name.” Jacob Black

“Could you … well, try to not be a … werewolf?” Bella Swan

“You really, honestly don’t mind that I morph into a giant dog?” Jacob Black

“I’m sort of used to weird by this point, you know.” Bella Swan

“Bye, Bella. I really hope you don’t die.” Jacob Black

“Leave it to you, Bella. Anyone else would be better off when the vampires left town. But you have to start hanging out with the first monsters you can find.” Alice Cullen

“What did you think you were going to find? I mean, besides me dead? Did you expect to find me skipping around and whistling showtunes? You know me better than that.” Bella Swan

“It was the night of the living dead around here. I still hear her screaming in her sleep…” Charlie Swan

nm_covers_japan1“Sam would be mad if I broke the treaty, and you probably wouldn’t like it too much if I killed your friend.” Jacob Black

“I don’t think he ever planned to outlive you by long.” Alice Cullen

“How strongly are you opposed to grand theft auto?” Alice Cullen

“You smell just exactly the same as always. So maybe this is hell. I don’t care. I’ll take it.” Edward Cullen

“In summary, she did jump off a cliff, but she wasn’t trying to kill herself. Bella’s all about the extreme sports these days.” Alice Cullen

“They have a name for someone who smells the way Bella does to me. They call her my singer – because her blood sings for me.” Edward Cullen

“It doesn’t count until she’s conscious, Rose.” Emmett Cullen

“I’m dead, right? I did drown. Crap, crap, crap! This is gonna kill Charlie.” Bella Swannm_covers_thailand

“I’ll never criticize Romeo again.” Edward Cullen

“After all the thousand times I’ve told you I love you, how could you let one word break your faith in me?” Edward Cullen

“I could see it in your eyes, that you honestly believed that I didn’t want you anymore. The most absurd, ridiculous concept – as if there were any way that I could exist without needing you!” Edward Cullen

“It never made sense for you to love me.” Bella Swan

“Before you, Bella, my life was like a moonless night. Very dark, but there were stars – points of light and reason … And then you shot across my sky like a meteor. Suddenly everything was on fire; there was brilliancy, there was beauty. When you were gone, when the meteor had fallen over the horizon, everything went black. Nothing had changed, but my eyes were blinded by the light. I couldn’t see the stars anymore. And there was no more reason for anything.” Edward Cullen

nm_covers_russia“My heart hasn’t beat in almost ninety years, but this was different. It was like my heart was gone – like I was hollow. Like I’d left everything that was inside me here with you.” Edward Cullen

“You, at least, made an effort. You got up in the morning, tried to be normal for Charlie, followed the pattern of your life. When I wasn’t tracking, I was … totally useless.” Edward Cullen

“You’ve chosen not to live without her, and that doesn’t leave me a choice.” Carlisle Cullen

“Seriously, Bella! I don’t have any idea how to not kill you.” Alice Cullen

“You’re wounding my ego, Bella. I just proposed to you, and you think it’s a joke.” Edward Cullen

“Well, I’m nearly a hundred and ten. It’s time I settled down.” Edward Cullen

“The treaty is quite specific. If any of them bite a human, the truce is over. Bite, not kill.” Jacob Black

Butterflies Need Love Too!

November 15th, 2009

FAERIE WARSFaeries and Demons and Kittens… Oh My!!

My husband is NOT a reader, so it amuses me on those rare occasions when he calls me during the day insisting that I look up a book.  More importantly? To date, he has yet to let me down.

His latest find was “Faerie Wars” which again… (congrats to him) is a winner, and a very promising start to the “Faerie War Chronicles.”  It has solid character development, a fluid plot, and several twists, sure to keep even skeptical readers engrossed and seeking the final “answer.”

The book was well written, and (sucessfully) from several variaying perspectives, each eventually emerging into one main plot line.

First you have Henry…average boy, average life, mundane existence…that is of course until he tries to rescue a butterfly from a cats mouth.  Turns out the butterfly was less insect and more little boy with wings who… has a thing for potato chips.

Second you have Pyrgus…the “Not quiet a butterfly” who SURPRISE! is actually the crown prince of the Faerie realm. He should practically be a member of PETA, and tends to jump before looking over the edge, but that of course is what makes a story good.

There are the evil cat killers…Brimstone and Chalkhill, There’s Blue…Pyrgus’s hot younger sister whole is a better spy than the royal guard, there’s Fogerty, the crotchety ex-bank robber who think aliens are taking over the world, and last but certainly not least…there is the Purple Emperor himself, who well…has a very unfortunate moment with an “Analog World” weapon.

“Faerie Wars” is a plethora of the unexpected.  There is a pissed off demon with a whistle in his head, a  lesbian mommy, a Princess who should learn to close the door, flamboyant leaders of a glue empire, and 1 very clumsy assassination plot.

It was…Narnia meets Harry Potter meets Lord of The Rings, and I LIKED it.

“Herbie Brennan” set us up for a world of endless possibilities and to be perfectly honest…I can’t wait.

Happy reading my fellow Analogers and remember…if you insist on having a journal cataloging all of your evil plans…give everyone fake names.
